Who am I?
My name is Morgan Ferris, and I am the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Sports Massage Therapist at Coach Morgan. I have been involved with the sports and physical activity industry to some capacity from the age of 5. This began with studying Kickboxing but extended to Modern and Contemporary Dance during my teenage years.
Education.
In 2010, I obtained a 1st Degree Black Belt in Kickboxing and began volunteering as an Assistant Martial Arts Instructor at Academy Martial Arts until 2017, where I became a fully-qualified Martial Arts Instructor and a 3rd Degree Black Belt. It was during this time that I developed an interest in strength and conditioning practices and its benefit to sports performance for students under my instruction.
At King Edward VI College, I studied Physical Education, Biology, Psychology and Dance, to which all subjects added to my understanding of anatomy, physiology and motor learning. This knowledge was only further developed when I undertook qualifications in gym-based exercise instructing and personal training. I took all the information I had learned back into the “classroom” and fine-tuned my teaching and coaching methods; Coach Morgan was born.
I am currently a 2nd year undergraduate student studying Strength and Conditioning BSc (Hons) at the University of Bedfordshire, beyond which I am seeking to obtain United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) accreditation and Sports Therapy MSc.
Experience.
Whilst working as a Martial Arts Instructor at Academy Martial Arts, I began working as a self-employed Personal Trainer. I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of youth, recreational and amateur athletes from a vast amount of sports, including football, rugby, tennis, kickboxing, ballroom dancing and basketball. During this role, I have collaborated and formed professional relationships with sports coaches, sports therapists, and physiotherapists to design and implement strength and conditioning exercise programmes for clients, specific to their goals and sports.
In 2020, I began working for Empower Martial Arts to which I am now a World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO GB) instructor member. I also have had roles as a multi-sports coach (football, rugby and tennis) with Sport4kids and as a fitness trainer at The Gym Group.
In these roles, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of people, aged 18-months to 60 years old, from a diverse range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. I have also had some experience coaching sports club members with special educational needs or disabilities during sports coaching sessions.
